The Fool

The Fool.  Numbered 0.  Astrology is Aquarius.  Element is Air.

Why I chose these recipes:  The Fool carries all four elements in their pack.  Fire, Water, Air and Earth.  Aruverda, the ancient Indian system of medicine focuses on balancing the body, mind and spirit to promote health and well being.  It teaches us to eat from the elements, so I gathered the food groups that corresponded with each element and made up the recipes from there.

The Magician

Numbered 1.  Astrology is Gemini.  Element is Air.

Why I chose these recipes:  The Magician is all about taking ether and making it into matter.  I find nothing in the kitchen more magical than dough, so these three recipes give a nice spectrum of alchemy to transform flour into the devine!

The High Priestess

Numbered 2.  Astrology is Cancer.  Element is Water.

Why I chose these recipes:  Pictured on the High Priestess card are Pomegranates, which symbolize fertility, life and the afterlife.  The High Priestess has connection to all of this and therefore makes the Pomegranate the perfect ingredient to build a heavenly menu from.

The Empress

Numbered 3.  Astrology is Taurus.  Planet is Venus.  Element is Earth.

Why I chose these recipes:  The Empress is associated with Gia, Mother Earth.  She is nurturing, rooted and lives a luxurious lifestyle.  What is more fitting than a nutritious bone broth, turned into a hearty meal of mushrooms and creamy rice, then followed with strawberries and cream?  Tell me how we can do better than that??

The Emperor

Numbered 4.  Astrology is Aries.  Planet is Mars.  Element is Fire.

Why I chose these recipes:  The Emperor is the exemplary leader.  Wearing a suit of armor, he is always ready to fight for what he feels will bring peace, prosperity and security to his people.  He is the ultimate father figure and, therefore, I wanted to make something that was masculine with a hard crust to protect the softer inside that the Emperor has, but does not often show.  What better than a crust of firey peppercorn protecting a tender, juicy steak?  Follow that with the hard crack of sugar to get to the creamy creme brûlée underneath.  A no fuss meal with excellence.

The Hierophant

Numbered 5.  Astrology is Taurus.  Planet is Mercury.  Element is Earth.

Why I chose these recipes:  The Hierophant is all about tradition and  teaching spiritual lessons that are institutionalized.  Since tradition is so strong with this card I wanted to go back to French Cuisine.  What is more fitting than learning how to make the five mother sauces?  The Hierophant is the bridge between heaven and earth, while the five mother sauces are the bridge from ordinary to extraordinary.

The Lovers

Numbered 6.  Astrology is Gemini.  Planet is Mercury.  Element is Air.

Why I chose these recipes:  The Lovers.  Need I say more??  Menu planning for them is easy.  Got Aphodisiacs, like dark chocolate, wine and strawberries???  Throwing together a meal is easy.  Let creativity sweep you away.

The Chariot

Numbered 7.  Astrology is Cancer.  Planet is the Moon.  Element is Water.

Why I chose these recipes:  The stuffed calamari is the chariot (the body). The scallops are the chariot wheels.  The Moon Pies associate the ruler of the star sign of this card as well as being linked to the devine intervention between spirit and the charioteer.  Oh, don’t you love metaphors?

Strength

Numbered 8  Astrology is Leo.  Planet is the Sun.  Element is Fire.

Why I chose these recipes:  I decided to focus on the Lion and Flowers of this card to make the recipes today.  Using Dandelion, Lion’s Mane and Rose Petals, the menu has strong bitter and pungent flavors with a gentle finish with the rose of the cake.  All that’s missing is a strong cup of coffee to go with!

The Hermit

Numbered 9  Astrology is Virgo.  Planet is the Mercury.  Element is Earth.

Why I chose these recipes:  In the Rider Waite Smith Tarot, The Hermit is depicted with a hunched back.  I thought that combined with the agedness of our Hermit plus the humble life he leads was more than enough inspiration to plan a menu.  Gnocchi is made from 1 single potato, The stars put on a show for free every night and the Hermit Cookies are old fashioned and hunched, just like him.

The Wheel of Fortune

Numbered 10  Astrology is Aquarius.  Planet is the Jupiter.  Element is Fire.

Why I chose these recipes:  As the Wheel goes round and round, we are reminded in the symbolism of the card that life is a game and it is up to us to keep a hand on the wheel so we always have free will to bring the outcome to a more favorable level.  What better way to experience The Wheel of Fortune than by attending a street fair, state fair or carnival and delight in all the iconic foods that go along with the experience.

Justice

Numbered 11  Astrology is Libra.  Planet is the Venus.  Element is Air.

Why I chose these recipes:  Lightening the load is exactly what we all wish to achieve.  A heavy mind and heavy heart never do any good, so we are going back to basics with what a balanced plate looks like.  Vegetables, Proteins, Starches and Fats.  We will explore the perfect balance of each and the verdict will be a healthier you in the process!

The Hanged Man

Numbered 12  Astrology is Pisces.  Planet is the Neptune.  Element is Water.

Why I chose these recipes:  We are in the upside down, so I felt it was fitting to make everything either in an upside down theme or reversed and in a new perspective.  The recipes are built from the bottom up so the flavor is built upon each layer.  Just as The Fool goes through a stripping away of what was old in order to transform into anew, same with the recipes we will be making today.

Death

Numbered 13  Astrology is Scorpio.  Planet is the :Pluto.  Element is Water.

Why I chose these recipes:  Well, they kind of speak for themselves.  I went with a death and funeral/gothic theme.  Vampire Chicken, Funeral Potatoes, Black Tahini Fudge and Pan de Muerto, which translates to Bread of Death.

Temperance

Numbered 14  Astrology is Sagittarius.  Planet is the :Jupiter.  Element is Water.

Why I chose these recipes:  Not only are we learning to bring the virtue of Temperance into our lives, we are also learning the art of Tempering food.  These recipes show off the technique so you can temper like a pro!

The Devil

Numbered 15  Astrology is Capricorn.  Planet is Saturn.  Element is Earth.

Why I chose these recipes:  I just wanted to light my food on fire and The Devil always give s me the opportunity!  Hot, firey foods hit the spot for our friend The Devil, so those that like it hot, here is your big moment!

The Tower

Numbered 16  Astrology is Aires.  Planet is Mars.  Element is Fire.

Why I chose these recipes:  I went quite literal with this card.  I chose a breakfast theme and made everything into a tower.  So much fun for such a dark card.
